2017: Spring is the season for fundraisers! Once again Moline Kiwanians, under the leadership of Mike Daly, VP and Mark Petersen, Secretary and Pancake planning pro, we held our 60th Kiwanis Pancake day at Culeman's Hall, and enlisted the volunteers from the Seton Middle School Kiwanis Builders Club. The breakfast was a success, and also featured a few raffle prizes to help our bottom line.
 
December, 2016 As in many years past, we assist the Salvation Army in taking shifts to ring the bell and spread holiday cheer at a Salvation Army Red Kettle. This year, we were at both Hy-Vee and Wal-Mart in Moline. The community was generous, and by taking these shifts, we help off-set costs to the Salvation Army to hire bell ringers.
 
Fall, 2016: In October, the role of President changed from Brent Nelson to Cathie Rochau.
She was suprised at her installation with a nomination and receipt of a
Walter Zeller fellow award for her work as 2nd VP in '15-'16. A Walter Zeller Fellowship is awarded for an Eliminate donation of $1,250.00 on behalf of the recipient. Eliminate strives to "Eliminate" Maternal Neo-natal Tetanus in mothers and their babies, in poor countries around the world. A donation at the. Zeller level saves or protects more than 690 mothers and their future babies. Rochau received the award from newly appointed Lt. Governor for District 17, Ed Kemnitz, Geneseo.
 
September, 2016: President Brent Nelson ended his term with a wonderful accomplishment. Under Brent's guidance, the Kiwanis noon club presented Camelot School, a special needs school in Coal Valley, IL, with new uniforms to use for students who may not have the means or ability to afford them. These new khaki pants and polo-style shirts were much appreciated by the staff. The inquiry initially came through from QC Evening Club member Kristin Fox, who is employed at the school. Thanks to theTarget store in Moline, they assisted us with a $50 gift card to assist even further with the purchase.
 
 
 
Summer 2016 saw many "days of service", where Kiwanians built a Gaga pit at the Two Rivers Y to encourage play, assisted in a "clean out" at the Union Congregational Church, Moline, to help them organize their storage space and recycle cans (thanks to a local boy scout troop for their help!) and also helped plant flowers and mulch to brighten up the garden area at Hope Creek Nursing & Rehabilitation, Moline.
 
          
 
 
Spring of 2016: We held our first annual Kiwanis Trivia Night at CityView Celebrations at Trimble Point, Moline. Trivia players paid admission and were also able to browse many silent auction items to increase our potential for raising funds, which we in turn, distribute back to the community for programs benefitting youth.
 
 
 
 
Summer, 2015: The noon club held a "School Supply Drive" in cooperation with the Moline K-Mart store, to collect needed school supplies for the Moline-Coal Valley School District.  Cart-loads were donated. Another feather in our cap, under the leadership of President Pete Wislander, was a matching grant with Kiwanis International Foundation for "SEP"- Summer Enrichment Program- for the Two Rivers YMCA in Moline. This program plans to prevent summer reading loss in youth, with very specific goals in mind. They were able to measure demostrable maintenance and even GROWTH in their summer reading in the youth they were able to assist. This is a great example of how Kiwanis wants to help youth and literacy in our community.
 
Spring, 2014: The QC Evening Kiwanis (filled with various ages, but strong on "YP's" held a very successful 3rd Annual Bags Tournament, held adjacent to Bad Boyz Pizza, downtown Moline. The Tournament continues to grow with this popular recreational game of throwing "corn bags".

2013: Under the leadership of President Mark Churchill, we see continued participation with club members in the "Operation Read" program at Garfield School, Moline.
 
Spring, 2013: QC Evening Kiwanis holds 1st Annual Bags Tournament, behind Bent River Brewery, Moline.

2012-13: Under the leadership of Lisa Powell-Williams, a very important initiative called "Operation Read" was begun. Operation read was a cooperative effort between United Way, the Two Rivers YMCA after-school programs, and Moline Kiwanis. Kiwanians would read to the children most Fridays when school was in session, and then conduct an activity or craft related to the theme of the book. We started this off at Garfield School, Moline. Also under Ms. Williams' term, the club reached "Distinguished Club" status, checking many of the required boxes to achieve this official status.
 
2011-12 Moline Kiwanians Bring Home the Hardware! Two of the Moline Club's finest took home distinguished awards from the September Mega Interclub meeting in Davenport. Jim Abbitt was surprised to learn he was to be honored with the Zeller Medallion and Mark Petersen was awarded the Amador Medallion. Congratulations from your Moline Kiwanis friends...you both exemplify the best in community service!!!


 
 
 
2010-11 Our club had the unique privilege of being the home club of both the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District Governor Elect Mel Peterson and the Division 17 Lt. Governor Elect, Mark Petersen.

We lost a great Kiwanian on July 16. Melbert (Mel) Peterson died quite unexpectedly while travelling in Germany following the Kiwanis Intertnational Convention. Everyone was looking forward to Mel serving as Governor of the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District in 2011-12.
 
2009-10 Jerry Drucker initiated a new and interesting way to donate "Porky" money, the "happy/sad" dollars received at each weekly meeting. Headline in The Dispatch read, "Moline Kiwanis Club wants to fund youth programs." The article said, "The Moline Kiwsanis Club has $1600 to give to local non-profits and service organizations to help fund programs that benefit Moline youth." Jerry's committee carefully considered all 12 of the applications and selected six finalists: Girl Scouts - $400; American Red Cross - $300; Skip-a-Long Day Care - $400; Children's Book Room - $200; Boys & Girls Club - $300. We also presented our annual contributions from the Moline Kiwanis Foundation to the Salvation Army and the Good Fellows Fund of $400 each.

We were one of many service clubs that helped with Moline cleanup day April 24. Resting after a hard morning work on 19th street are Careyna Wennekamp, Mel Peterson and Maya Wennekamp. The Wennekamps are daughters of member Mike. (From The Dispatch, page B1, Monday, April 26, 2010)

 
On May 7 we held our club's 90th Anniversary banquet with Kiwanis International President Paul Palazzolo as featured speaker. I-I District Governor Kevin McConnell was also in attendance. The banquet celebration was preceded by a golf outing on May 6. The entire affair was ably managed by Mark Petersen.

Our own Mel Peterson was elected, at the 93rd Annual I-I District Convention on August 7th, to serve as Governor-Elect of the I-I District in 2010-2011. Article in the Illeiowan, I-I District Magazine.
 
2008-09 In 2008, our Mark Petersen organized volunteers from the clubs in Division 16 and 17 to marshal at hole #4 for the John Deere Classic, our local premier PGA event at Deere Run Golf Course in Silvis. It was so successful that Mark continued it as an annual Kiwanis Service Project. This picture shows the volunteers on the course at Deere Run in 2009.
 
2007-08 Wayne Starr received special recognition for 30 years of continuous service as a member of Moline Kiwanis.

"Kiwanis Wins $500 in Dollar Hole-in-One Contest" said the headline. Mark Peterson, playing for our club, was closest to the pin. In the picture on the right he receives the check for the club. Details at Quad Cities Online

From the I-I District Illeiowan magazine of Sept-Oct 2008, page 8: "Congratulations to Mel & Betty Peterson upon receiving the prestigious Superstar Award from the PLGA (Past Lt. Governors Association). There is not enough space to tell of all they do … but for sure, they are very dedicated to Kiwanis in all capacities. Thanks, Mel & Betty … you are greatly appreciated."
 
2006-07 Members brought new, unwrapped toys to our meetings for the Toys for Tots program. We also, for the first time, sent member volunteers to help with the Toys for Tots drop off at WQAD.
 
2005-06 Betty and Mel Peterson started a new project, promoted at the Kiwanis International Convention, to involve our club in the effort to get sufficient Folic Acid (a B vitamin) into the diet of expectant moms in order to reduce the incidents of spina bifida and anencephaly. The campaign is sponsored by the U.S. Center for Disease Control, the March of Dimes and the National Council on Folic Acid. We launched our involvement with a number of our members handing out literature at South Park Mall. Our members approved a three year ($5000 per year) commitment to the building of the new Moline City Library. Brent Fetterolf launched a Moline Kiwanis Internet web site – http://www.molinekiwanis.org. Honors were awarded to: Betty and Mel Peterson, Founder’s Circle Award; Ed Claseman, Distinguished Secretary; Kevin Schoonmaker, Distinguished President; Moline Kiwanis Club, Distinguished Club.
 
2004-05 We installed new benches, sporting the colorful Kiwanis International Emblem, in Moline’s Kiwanis Park. Our local newspaper, The Dispatch, featured the headline "Charities bring home bacon from Kiwanis' Porky Pig." The article said "Thirteen local agencies and schools received some extra cash Tuesday from Moline Noon Kiwanis Club members, who broke open their 'Porky Pig' bank. The $2,490 in the pink bank –adorned with a collar, tie and American flag pin - came from club members chipping in donations for happy or sad moments they shared with their colleagues over the past two years, Kiwanis member Reid Odean said.” Brian Ramsay launched a “Stock Challenge” fund raiser. For an entrance fee of $10, participating members each selected a common stock traded on the national stock exchanges. Whoever was “smart” (more likely lucky) enough to pick the best performing stock, during the weeks of competition, was declared “winner.” There was also a second place “winner.” Half of the proceeds went to the local Christian Friendliness Ministry and the other half was divided 70/30 between the club winners. We sent member volunteers to help with the annual Arrowhead Ranch Roundup.
 
2003-04 Thanks to Sherrie Abbitt and Betty Peterson, with help from Augustana Circle K students, doll stuffing, sewing and kits with soaps and personal items were assembled for an overseas children’s hospital. Several of our members manned the phones for the KWQC Children’s Therapy Center Telethon. Jerry Drucker led a group of volunteer members into the 5K NAMI Walk to raise funds for the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Ed Claseman and Wayne Starr were awarded the Tablet of Honor for outstanding Kiwanis service. We contributed money for tuition so that students from Hamilton Elementary School could attend the Exchange City business education model set up by Junior Achievement. We sent some volunteer members to help with the Special Olympics. Jerry Drucker began a campaign to collect good used clothing for homeless and needy clients of the Robert Young Center.
 
2002-03 Participation in The Business Show was a first for our club. We gave financial support and helped in the booth with Kiwanis literature. We presented the City of Moline with an $1183 check to purchase one new fire fighting outfit. We sent some of our members to volunteer for the WLLR/St. Jude’s Radiothon. We had members handing out water and doing other tasks for Crime Stoppers Run. We sent volunteers to help with the Moline Little League baseball games. We had a “One Woman Fund Raiser” – Betty Peterson donated the wages she earned while working part time during the busy holiday season at Lagomarcinos local cafe. Mel Peterson received the Tablet of Honor award for the Kiwanian “who does it all and does it right.” President Tim Moss and his family launched the first “Join Hands Day” to tidy up the grounds and plant flowers and a vegetable garden at the Boys and Girls Club of Moline.
 
2001-02 Kevin Schoonmaker brought three awards from the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center. This was a first for Moline Kiwanis and the awards were for: 1) Holiday Week Sponsor (it's hard to get organizations to take on holiday weeks, especially at Christmas), 2) First Time Sponsor, and 3) 32% participation - more than our 15% goal. We also received the following thank-you note from the Center: "Please thank all the Kiwanis Members and their family members for donations. Forty-eight possible lives can be saved from the 16 units collected. Congratulations." For the first time we sent volunteers to help with “The Great Illinois-Iowa Shootout” basketball extravaganza at Augustana College. Selling programs were leader, Mark Peterson, with Derek Johansen, Tim Moss, Scott Raes and volunteers from Augustana Circle K club.
 
The "River Committee" of Tim Moss, Cathy Wonderlich, and Helena Reid worked hard to set up a service booth for the approximately 3,000 bicycle riders along the Mississippi river for the annual Father’s Day ”Ride The River.” Biking participants got an offer of refreshment and we had a chance to show them what Kiwanis hospitality is all about. Mel Peterson's persistent hard work AGAIN came to fruition. Two super looking Kiwanis benches, displaying the Kiwanis logo in color, were installed at what we used to call "Kiwanis Point" along the Mississippi River's Ben Butterworth Parkway. In honor of our dear departed Louis Coopmans, "forever" member and song leader, we renamed it "LOUIS COOPMANS MEMORIAL POINT - fitting tribute to our faithful-to-the-end friend, "Louie." Our Youth Services Committee donated funds to help supply toys and games for children at Trinity Hospital Riverside Treatment Center. This helps keep the children occupied while their parents or care givers are receiving vital counseling in parenting or addressing addiction or dealing with emotional crisis.

Arleigh Hohenboken and Baldwin Day were each honored with the George F. Hixson International award. Baldwin’s award was sent by his former K Club in Dunedin, Florida to recognize his long time service as a song leader. Kevin Schoonmaker gathered a group of club volunteers to respond to a plea for help from Habitat For Humanity. They salvaged what they could from a home about to be demolished. Two truck loads and a van of salvaged items were taken to the Habitat Re-store to be sold to raise money for Habitat building projects. 
 
 2000-01 Two new projects were started by our club. Kevin Schoonmaker capably organized our first involvement in a community blood drive. The second project touched on our top priority of “Young Children -Priority One.” We joined hands with several community groups dedicated to a “Success by 6” outreach. The program has been featured in the press and on Channel 6. It is a creative method of getting books in the hands of more children before and by age six so that all get an enthusiastic start toward acquiring the survival skill of reading well. Our members covered a booth at North Park Mall to launch this program. All our area clubs endorse it. Seeing that homes with children have books available for little kids to be read to and simply to handle is still the greatest ingredient in helping to ensure children will be readers by age six. Mark Peterson, our 1999-00 President, was honored with the Distinguished President Award extended to our club because we continue to sponsor Circle K, Builders and Key clubs and because of our excellence in serving our community. Mark would be the first to say that it takes the whole club pulling together to merit this award.
 
1999-00 One of Moline's best-kept secrets was pleasingly revealed in the Dispatch on Sunday October 1, 2000. Our Rock River bike-jog trail, built by our Moline club was featured as a way to "Catch the Colors of Fall". It was described as "Some of the most charming, rugged riverfront scenery -complete with bogs, marshes, enormous cottonwoods, oaks, maples, willows, majestic herons and ducks and geese of every description". Nearly six column inches plus a picture on the front page of the "Life" section is a tribute to the contribution that our trail has made to the enhancement of our community.
 
George Strader, Bud Everett and Frank Nowinski were honored with Hixson awards based on our club’s continuing strong support for International’s Iodine Deficiency Disorders campaign. Lt. Governor Amron Buchanan presented our club with a banner with the names of all of our Hixson award recipients. We were designated an "Honored Club" because one third of our members have been chosen. The George F. Hixson Fellowship, named in honor of the first president of Kiwanis International, recognizes deserving Kiwanians who are honored by their club with a major contribution to the Kiwanis International Foundation. Earnings from this endowment fund are used to provide grants in support of Kiwanis sponsored youth, disaster relief and the needs of children around the world, especially the Kiwanis International Worldwide Service Project, Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD). The "Honored Club" award reflects the tremendous commitment of our club toward fighting IDD. We were one of 250 clubs throughout the world that were thus recognized in the Kiwanis International Foundation Newsletter.
 
1998-99 Mel Peterson was awarded a Banner Patch for his 1996-97 service as Lt. Governor of Division 17. But it didn’t end there. Mel accepted the call to serve a second term as Lt. Governor for 1998-99. Russ Mason and Frank Telleen received George F. Hixson awards for faithful and distinguished service in the name of Kiwanis. Our club and other clubs use this avenue for honoring special club members through a contribution to the Kiwanis International Fund for Eradication of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD). Our club received a Banner Patch representing the fact that our club has raised $300 per member for IDD
 
1997-98 Moline Kiwanis Club led the entire 17th Division in giving to the International Kiwanis Challenge - eradication of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). International Hixson awards went to Bill Bernbrock, Ron Paschall, Mary Foster and Ray Brasmer based on support of the IDD program.
 
1996-97 Under the leadership of Mark Petersen, we founded a Kiwanis Builders Club at John Deere Middle School in Moline. Mel Peterson lead the charge to “flourishing” Floreciente Park, at Moline’s Northwest entrance, with beautiful landscaping, neighborhood collaborations and new signs, including our club sign, that welcome folks to Moline. Jerry Drucker, Mark Peterson, Mark Petersen, and Dick Riddell received International Hixson Awards recognizing their outstanding service through Kiwanis and given through our club’s participation in the Iodine Deficiency Disorders campaign, International’s World Wide Service Project. We honored the long-time work of our Club Secretary-Treasurer, Ed Claseman, and Assistant Secretary-Treasurer, Wayne Starr, with the Louis B. Amador Award.
 
1995-96 Our member, Wayne Starr, was instrumental in founding a new Kiwanis club in Milan Illinois. Wayne was honored with the prestigious International President’s Award for all his work in promoting area growth of Kiwanis. Also, Ed Claseman, Louis Coopmans, Johnny Faust, John Hotle, Wayne Starr, Lloyd Schwiebert, Mel Peterson and Betty Peterson were honored for their outstanding service to Kiwanis, receiving the International Hixson Award based on contributions to the Kiwanis International Foundation and its Worldwide Service Project, Iodine Deficiency Disorders.
Molly Schnell and Bill Buzard graciously took on the responsibility of starting a “Marble Lottery” at our weekly club meetings. It’s as much about encouraging involvement at our meetings as it is about money. “Lottery” ticket sales proceeds are divided: half to an annually designated charity, one quarter to the week’s lucky ticket holder and one quarter into a “pot” eventually given to the weekly winner if she/he draws the “clear” marble from the bag of remaining marbles after the marble drawn each week is retired. The banter that goes with the weekly drawing adds lots of fun. Bud Everett, with very helpful input from a number of members, inaugurated a loose-leaf Yearbook with sections devoted to the various endeavors of the club and designed to be updated annually with insert pages.
 
1994-95 We inaugurated our first woman President, Diane Schneden. No surprise to anyone since Diane has been a faithful and hard working member since she became the first woman member of Moline Kiwanis. Thanks to the efforts of member Mel Peterson, a Kiwanis Circle K club was chartered at Augustana College. 
 
1993-94 Legion of Honor awards for 25 or more years of service to Kiwanis went to Lloyd Schwiebert (50 years), Bill Miller, Lloyd Sellers, John Hotle, Roger Smith, Louis Coopmans, Byrd Krumbholz and Ed Walther.

1992-93 Kiwanis International Legion of Honor awards were presented to Bill Bernbrock, Gene Case, Byrd Krumbholz and Bill Morrison for outstanding and long term service to our organization.
 
1991-92 We began several “firsts” with some members participating in “Teacher for a Day” program; also we provided help plus money for the “First Day Fund” to provide school supplies for needy kids. As part of International’s “Young Children – Priority One”, we gave a special video training program for foster parents to Lutheran Social Services of Illinois and, in conjunction with the Moline Fire Department and Trinity Medical Center, we began providing a smoke alarm and fire safety training for each newborn at Trinity.

1990-91 Our club donated $2500 to build the Kiwanis Corner at the Quad-City Kids and Company Children’s Museum. We hosted a bicycle safety program and “Terrific Kids” elementary school awards program. We also hosted the first Quad City Kiwanis meeting with over 350 members attending and the first Division 17 golf outing. Members Charles Chapman, Ralph Birks and Ray Brasmer were awarded the Kiwanis International Legion of Honor for 25 or more years of service to Kiwanis.

1989-90 President Jerry Drucker, with the assistance of Ralph Gongwer and Jack Meyer, started the Quad-Cities Kiwanis Council. The Council is made up of the presidents, or their designated representatives, from all of the clubs in the Quad- Cities. They meet regularly to discuss common interests, share ideas and help coordinate Kiwanis activities throughout the area. We installed a new underground wiring system for our Christmas lights project on Ben Butterworth Parkway along the Mississippi. Mel Peterson, Fundraising chair, started a new and very successful project of selling giant coloring books specially geared to the Christmas season. Mel and Jack Meyer also began a program of selling roses each year for delivery during Secretary’s Week.

 
Jim Nowicki, Community Service chair, and assistant chair, Darrel Parker, launched our Club’s participation in Moline’s “Adopt-A-Street” program – we assumed the responsibility for keeping a couple of major streets clean. Jim and Darrel also organized a workday at Kiwanis Park to install new playground equipment paid for by our club. Brad Snyder did an outstanding job working with the Moline school administration, Moline police force and WQAD launching the “Know to Say No” to drugs program in 14 Moline elementary schools. Mark Peterson, Russ Scott and the new Yearbook Committee produced our first club yearbook (with lots of pictures!), unique in our District. Mary Foster and D’Ann Lagerblade began publication of a classy new type of club monthly newsletter, also with pictures.
 
1988 Moline Kiwanis Club, with the strong leadership of President Dick Riddell, has undertaken major responsibility for Christmas tree lights along the Mississippi River front Ben Butterworth Parkway.

1987 Russ Scott took the lead in our first K-Mart Christmas Tree project. Russ, as Managing Editor of The Daily Dispatch, was also the right man to volunteer, starting this year, giving our club current news updates at our weekly meetings. 
 
The dawning of a new day for Moline Kiwanis. The first woman, Diane Schneden, was inducted into the Club. Many other women have followed and all have provided new energy and enthusiasm. It is appropriate that in our 75th anniversary year, Diane was our president.

1985 After several years of careful planning, fund raising, and hard work the Kiwanis Bike and Jog Trail along the Rock River was completed and opened. Although others helped, this project was largely the result of the dream, hard work, countless hours of begging, arm twisting and unlimited patience on the part of Dick Riddell.
 
1970 (May 12) 50th Anniversary party at the LeClaire, Rona Barret, Hollywood columnist, was the speaker. Bill Morrison, the master of ceremonies, was so glamorous that Rona kissed him.  
 
1956 The first peanut day was held with the sale of 5,000 bags (according to the president's report). This program has been a continuing annual event since then.
 
1955 The first pancake day was held. This program has continued annually ever since. According to the president's reports, the largest profit reported was $2,021.70 in 1966. This year the Moline Club sponsored a Kiwanis Club in East Moline and a Key Club at Moline High School.
 
1947 The gum ball machine project began and was the oldest continuous fund raiser. The peak year for this project was $4,300 in 1956.

1938 - 1965 For 27 years, from 1938 to 1965, there was at least one Kiwanian on the Moline Board of Education. Except for three one year periods, for 17 years from 1948 through 1965 Kiwanians served as president of the Board of Education and of the three who were not Kiwanians, one later became a member and another was the wife of a member. For 22 years, from 1943 to 1965, all three superintendents who served during that period were members of the Club and two served as Club president.
 
1938 Commencement of the Kiwanis Learn to Swim program which through the years provided training for hundreds of children.
 
1926 - 1956 In 1926, a series of farm-city dinners was started by the Club's Agricultural Committee. Rural churches were invited to sponsor chicken dinners in the fall which Kiwanis members and guests would support. At the end of the season the club entertained their hosts and hostesses at a banquet at the LeClaire Hotel. By 1929 the program had expanded to the point that more farmers were invited and the season finale had to be moved to Wharton Field House where 1,400 people were served and merchants contributed $2,200 to the cost. Eventually the crowds were such that the dinner was discontinued and the Field House was filled with people coming to the program. The presidents' report for 1947 stated that 7,000 packed the Field House and even into the early '50's full houses were reported. It was not until 1956 that interest in the program had finally fallen victim to television and disinterest in chicken dinners and the last program took place in 1956.
 
1922 With completion of the LeClaire Hotel the Club stated meeting there and continued until the Hotel closed on 01/31/81, then at Elks Club until 02/29/88, and at Velies until 05/05/92. We have been at several locations since then.
 
1921 The Club's first major project, a tourist camp at Moline Riverside Park, was conceived and completed. It became known nationwide as the finest camp in the Midwest. A graceful entrance arch greeted the weary traveler of pre-motel days.

May 7, 1920 Charter granted to Moline Kiwanis Club at a dinner meeting at the Moline Commercial Club attended by 200 including members from the Rock Island, Davenport, and Clinton Clubs. Charles P. Skinner was elected as the first president. He was the Mayor of Moline at age 32. His wife was a granddaughter of John Deere. Among the 100 charter members were S. P. (Steve) Albrecht, a jeweler; G. O. Dietz, Judge of the Moline City Court; Andrew Olson, lawyer and Referee in Bankruptcy; Bruce Randall, who as executive secretary of the Community Service Council helped to arrange a program of community service for the Club; and Harry Sward of the Dispatch.
